Il Roseto

Above the Circus Maximus is one of the most beauiful places for spring in Rome. The city rose garden...mh, I would even claim that it is one of the most beautiful places in the world. Come and see! Maybe you will agree with me after this post...or even better...after your visit to the roseto.

The roseto is right above the Circo Massimo. That is why you have an awesome view on the Palatine. And, of course, everbody loves the Roman umbrella pines. So you see, already the sheer location of this place makes it very special.

In the distance you can see, like on this picture, the Vittoriano.

Already in the third century a.d. the area was home to a temple of the goddess Flora. This cannot be a coincidence!

Later, form 1645 until 1934, it was the Jewish cemetary- called Jewish Garden. Not surprising since the Jewish Ghetto is close by. The cemetary was transferred to the Verano cemetary and the area was used as a vegetable garden during war times.

The original Roman rose garden was actually founded in 1931 in the Colle Oppio Park, my favorite parc just in front of my former apartment building.

I discovered another fascinating story that I need to research more:

The rose garden was planted there on the initiative of the contessa Mary Gayley Senni, an American women. She was part of the jury for the yearly price for the best new rose variations until 1954. I made a quick check: she was on her Grand Tour, fell in love with a Roman conte, had seven kids and was a friend of the famous writer Edith Warthon. I am so intrigued! I need to find out more about this woman! But this will be for another post...or even a historical novel...?

Isn't it amazing. I wanted to make a quick post about the rose garden and I end up with so many different historical layers! Rome really is a historical layer cake. No other city has this in this intensity!

The rose garden at Colle Oppio was destroyed in World War II and with the agreement of the Jewish community the location of their old cemetary became the new rose garden. As a reference to this the paths of the garden were designed in the form of a menorah.

And then, there are all these wonderful roses!

The rose garden is a great reason to go to Rome in the spring. It opens end of April and closes mid-June. And it is even for free.
